Taipei's glossiest square mile: flagship malls, sky-high cocktail bars and a tower that defines the skyline. Here is how to do Xinyi in style - and where to stay.
If Taipei has a downtown of ambition, it is Xinyi. Built on a planned grid around the bamboo-segmented spire of Taipei 101, this is the city at its most polished - flagship department stores connected by sky-bridges, glass towers full of design studios, and a skyline that comes into its own after dark. It is where Taipei does luxury without losing the easy, unshowy warmth that makes the city so likeable.
Spend a day and an evening here and you get the full range: serious shopping, world-class dining, and a rooftop drink with the tower close enough to touch. Here is how to make the most of it.
A day in Xinyi, hour by hour
The shopping & design circuit
Xinyi is walkable luxury. The malls cluster within a few blocks and connect by elevated walkways, so you can browse from international flagships to local design labels without crossing a road. Bellavita is the most opulent - a marble-and-chandelier hall of European houses - while Eslite Spectrum is where to find Taiwanese designers, craft homeware and a basement food market worth lingering in. Even if you are not buying, the architecture and the people-watching are the point.
Rooftop bars & the skyline
The Xinyi after-dark ritual is a drink with altitude. The bars on the upper floors of the district's towers and hotels frame Taipei 101 better than any observation deck - you get the tower in the composition rather than standing inside it. Arrive before sunset to claim a window, watch the spire's lighting cycle through its colours, and stay for the slow drift of the city settling into night. For something free, the Elephant Mountain trail is a 20-minute climb to the most photographed vantage in Taipei.
Xinyi is the one district where Taipei lets itself look expensive - and from the right rooftop, it earns every bit of it.
Where to stay
This is the district to splurge on location. W Taipei is the design statement - a 31st-floor pool, the buzzing WOOBAR, and rooms wired for the night. The Grand Hyatt sits literally beneath Taipei 101 with the city's grandest lobby and a serious spa. For a quieter, art-filled luxury, Humble House faces the elevated park with a residential calm. Compare all three below, each with live rates for your dates.
