Ximending after dark: neon lights & urban culture

Taipei's loudest, youngest district comes alive after sunset - neon, street food, fashion and the century-old Red House at its core. Here is how to do Ximending at night.

A route through Ximending, Taipei.

If Tokyo has Shibuya, Taipei has Ximending. This pedestrianised grid in the west of the city is where Taiwanese youth culture is made and remade - streetwear and sneaker shops, claw-machine arcades, indie tattoo studios, buskers, and the smell of fried chicken cutlets thick in the air. It is brash, bright and completely addictive after dark.

By day it is busy; by night it is electric, the neon reflecting off the crowds at the main crossing. Here is how to spend an evening in the thick of it.

Start at the Red House

Anchor your night at the Red House (Ximen Hong Lou), a striking octagonal brick building from 1908 that has been a market, a theatre and now a creative hub with a craft market and bars in the lanes behind it. It is the calm, historic counterpoint to the neon a block away.

What to eat

Ximending is a street-food sprawl. Graze as you wander - portions are small so you can try more.

  • Ay-Chung flour-rice noodles - the legendary standing-room bowl with a queue to match.
  • Hot-Star giant fried chicken - the face-sized cutlet that started the trend.
  • Modern Toilet - the gimmicky themed cafe, if you are travelling with kids or the curious.
  • Bubble tea from every corner - this is the city that invented it.

Ximending is sensory overload in the best way - eat as you walk, follow the music, and don't plan too hard.

An evening in Ximending, hour by hour

  1. browse the craft market and the design shops in the lanes behind it.

  2. the standing-room institution at the heart of the grid.

  3. then wander the sneaker and streetwear flagships as the neon comes up.

  4. dance crews and the full neon spectacle.

  5. or a craft beer in one of the bars tucked behind the Red House.

Ximending is fully pedestrianised, so it is one of the few places in Taipei you can wander with your head up and no traffic to dodge. It runs late - many shops stay open past 10pm and the food stalls later still.
