Yilan is what Taipei does on the weekend. An hour east of the capital, the Xueshan Tunnel bores through the mountains and spits you out into a different pace entirely - a green coastal plain of rice paddies, hot-spring towns and a wild Pacific shore. It is farm country and beach country at once, and in the last decade it has quietly become the island's home of the design farmstay.

Paddy fields & pastoral design
Yilan's signature image is the rice paddy with a single sculptural villa rising from it - a wave of small, architect-designed minsu (homestays) that turned farmland into one of Taiwan's most photogenic stays. Drive the back roads between Dongshan and Wujie and you pass mirror-still paddies reflecting the mountains, dotted with concrete-and-glass retreats.
