Mist over still water, temples on the shore, and a cycle path rated among the world's most beautiful. Here is how to do Sun Moon Lake - and where to wake up over the water.
High in the central mountains, Sun Moon Lake holds the stillest mornings in Taiwan. Mist sits on the water at dawn, the temples on the shore appear and dissolve, and the whole valley seems to hold its breath until the sun burns through. It is the country's most romantic landscape, and it rewards travellers who slow right down.
Give it two nights. One to arrive and settle, one full day to ride, cruise and climb - and two slow mornings to watch the mist do its thing.
How to get there
From Taipei, take the high-speed rail to Taichung, then the direct Nantou bus up to Shuishe Pier (about an hour). Most lakeside hotels are a short hop from there, and the boats and Ropeway are all reachable car-free.
Around the lake
- Cycle the shoreline path - regularly rated one of the world's most beautiful rides; gentle and mostly flat.
- Wenwu Temple - a grand hillside shrine with the lake spread out below.
- Ci'en Pagoda - climb at dawn for the classic mist-over-water view.
- Sun Moon Lake Ropeway - a cable car over the ridge to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.
- Ita Thao - the lakeside village of the indigenous Thao people, for food and craft.

Wake before the lake does. The hour the mist holds is the reason you came.
A day at the lake, hour by hour
- Out for sunrise: the Ci'en Pagoda climb or a quiet spot on the Shuishe shore as the mist holds
- The Sun Moon Lake Ropeway over the ridge for the long valley views
- Hire a bike and ride the shoreline path while the afternoon light softens
Visit Wenwu Temple by car or scooter in the late afternoon when the tour buses thin, and time the Ropeway for a clear window - it closes in high wind. Two nights lets you bank two sunrises, which is the real reason to stay rather than day-trip.
Where to stay: a comparison
The Lalu is the lake's minimalist icon - a Aman-school design landmark with an infinity pool that dissolves into the water, best for couples and a splurge. Fleur de Chine is the grand all-rounder, with in-house hot springs and rooms built for families. Del Lago adds contemporary style at a gentler rate. Pick The Lalu for romance and design, Fleur de Chine for facilities and families. Compare all three below, each with live rates for your dates.
